Why Back Education in Palestine?

Trivia with a Cause 2024 raised enough funds to support two programs:

– The Dkaika Education Access Project for school students and young people to have safe transport to school and university. This trip has always been precarious, but with increased settler violence this project is more important than ever to ensure the community can keep accessing their right to education and remain on their lands.

– The Dream Centre for Children with Autism, a school that offers specialized services to one of the most marginalized segments of the Palestinian society. By late September 2023, the centre was caring for 120 students with a specialized team of 16 professionals in special education. With permits for workers cancelled since October 7th 2023, parents have been unable to pay for their children’s schooling. Friends of Hebron Sydney raised the required matched funding to keep the school operational in the 2024 – 2025 school year.

Friends of Hebron Sydney is aiming to raise enough funds again this year to support these two projects that are very dear to us and the community.

The new school year in Palestine starts in September and we are raising funds to continue our support for the Dkaika School Access Project.

To support the steadfastness of the population of Dkaika and assure the continued education (especially the female population) is to provide school transportation.

With your help, Friends of Hebron can fund this project will support students to continue with their education by providing transport to the closest high school and university.

Young women, in particular have benefited from this opportunity to continue with their education as, previously they could not travel safely outside the village.

Our 2019 Achievements

Since our last Trivia night, we’ve had a busy year supporting three important projects:

a major contribution to the cost of rebuilding a school in one of Hebron’s outlying villages,
continued funding for the Dkaika school access project,
a returned to our first ever kindy (the Huda kindergarten) to provide wages for two early childhood teachers.

Help us provide support for these critical projects in areas where schooling is severely impacted by the occupation. In 2019, the General Assembly Security Council verified “118 incidents of interference with education in the Occupied Palestinian Territory by Israeli forces (113) and Israeli settlers (5), affecting 23,188 children.”

In the Hebron school community around Tel Rumeida, where, in November alone, 238 rounds of tear gas canisters and 51 rounds of sound grenades were fired by the Israeli military when Palestinian children were leaving school, our support goes a long way!

Trivia With A Cause 2015

Background

Dkaika village

Dkaika has been fighting for its existence with the Israeli government for a decade. It has been demolished, rebuilt and faced yet again with demolition orders. In 2011, they even demolished part of the school.

Since then, UNICEF and Islamic Relief Worldwide have rebuilt and renovated the school, providing a better environment for the students. However it is a primary school only; after Year 6 students must travel at least 7 km for high school.

Driver in Dkaika taking the young boys to school – the girls get to sit inside!For years, the students have walked this distance, over rough mountain tracks, in the heat of summer and through winter snow. Now we are supporting a driver and vehicle, to take those kids to high school.

The aim of this Trivia with a Cause is to raise sufficient funds to ensure the fuel and the driver’s wages are paid until the end of the school year, and if possible, into next year.

Now that the school transport scheme is operating, three young women from Dkaika village are able to take up their university places. After dropping off the high school kids, the driver continues to the nearest university so these young women can continue their studies.

Festival of Friendship Refugee Week Event 2014

The 2014 Refugee Week Festival will support a school transport programme to help teenage girls in the remote community of Dkaika finish high school. Currently the students have to walk for almost an hour, must walk 7km along a rough 4WD mountain track to the nearest high school

The situation in Dkaika
The students have to walk for almost an hour to reach the nearest junior high school and even further to a school where they complete year 12.This has lead to high dropout rates, especially for girls.

The solution identified by the community is a school transport plan and with your support, we can help them achieve this.

You can help support the students of Dkaika by coming to our Refugee Week Festival, which will be held on Saturday, 21^st June, in Leichhardt Town Hall. The money raised will pay the wages of a driver and we hope, the running costs of the vehicle, to take students to high school and university.

Leichhardt Friends of Hebron have been successful in supporting the establishment of three kindergarten facilities in Hebron and the South Hebron Hills. Through our partnership with the Hebron International Resource Network (HIRN) we are working with some of the most impoverished, vulnerable and threatened communities in the area.

Dkaika is one of these, an isolated and vulnerable community in the far south of Palestine, only metres from the boundary with Israel. Sadly, the community faces a targeted campaign of isolation and destruction from the Israeli Army.

The Israeli authorities are threatening to demolish 35 homes and buildings, including at least one classroom. At least 4 homes and one classroom have already been demolished.

They also prevent the community from accessing the most basic services, including electricity and running water although these are provided to Israeli residents of nearby illegal settlements. Despite the hardship this causes, people feel able to remain on their traditional lands as long as their children have access to education, which is highly valued in Palestine people.
